History of The Lemmond House: We know the house was built in 1907 and we know that in 1920 Samuel Lemmond married Cora Klutz, added a second story to the house and raised a family. The last Lemmond to live here moved out in the mid 1980’s. The Lemmond’s were a prominent family in Matthews at the turn of the century and are listed frequently in the Matthews Historical Society’s book on the town.
Renovation: This is Bill’s third historical home restoration. He purchased the home in 1996 in such disrepair that a condemned sign was hanging on the caved-in front porch. Bill spent the next ten years off and on rebuilding and renovating the home. The process was hard but rewarding because of Bill’s love for historical homes. The ground floor has 9 ft ceilings and the original dark oak flooring. On the 2nd floor, the floors are heart pine mellowed to beautiful rich colors. At the beginning, both 1st and 2nd floors had water damage from a leaking roof but Bill was able to repair those areas with material saved in the area where three large bathrooms were added. Great attention has been paid to detail, inside and out … from the staircase to the antique light fixtures and ceilings. Outside, the exterior of the home is a mix of old and new clear pine siding. The old-looking fence with brick columns around the backyard was achieved by re-using the bricks from the old fireplaces torn out of the house.
Breakfast: Our delicious breakfast menu includes French toast and maple bacon, or eggs with cheese, homemade fried potatoes and bacon plus toast or bagels. All our breakfasts are served with a fresh fruit salad and juice. We use fresh ground Starbucks coffee. We cater to those with special needs diets.
Your Innkeepers: Connie and Bill have been married for ten years, half of which has been spent restoring this home. They then moved in and Connie started decorating. We welcome you to our historic home that we hope everyone will enjoy!
We truly look forward to serving our future guests.
Bill and Connie Clayton
